UGRacing’s EV branch consists of many subteams working together to design and manufacture a competitive electrically powered formula student car. From designing parts on the car to testing different conceptual designs, the EV branch is a great place for students to learn and develop new skills whilst getting hands on experience in a real engineering environment.

Tractive System
Recruiting 1-2
Desired Skills:
• Familiarity with PCB design software
• Knowledge or Interest in EV powertrains; battery packs, motor and inverter, chargers
• Hands-on electrical assembly experience
Opportunities Include:
PCB Design
Electronics Assembly and Testing
High Voltage System Design
Power Electronics
Control Electronics (Motor Control & Regenerative Braking)
As part of the Tractive System team, we are responsible for the safety and effectiveness of UGR’s EV battery, which includes monitoring cell voltages and temperatures, implementing robust battery management systems, ensuring proper thermal regulation, conducting regular safety inspections, and developing protocols for emergency shutdown procedures to protect both the vehicle and its operators during testing and competition.
As we enter our 4th year of an EV design, we strive towards refining our previous systems and putting efficiency at the forefront as we aim to compete at a competitive level at FSUK’s dynamic events.
As a member of the tractive system team, you will be given the opportunity to follow the entire development process from start to finish. Design of Tractive System boards require not only knowledge with regards to electronic design, but also mindfulness in terms of both safety and physical restraint; packaging becomes crucial to consider. Manufacturing and testing follow, and with these tasks, the chance to construct and analyse the performance of your design arises. With testing, exposure to high voltage lines may be present, so a keen eye and awareness will be needed! Having everything assembled, we are then able to test it all together within the vehicle.
From a technical standpoint, background knowledge of KiCad or equivalent PCB design platforms and CAD applications would be valuable but can be learnt. As well as this, a passion to learn and enthusiasm to get stuck in with hands-on garage work will be key!
Much like the powertrain sub-team, integration and cooperation will be critical to ensure component functionality, not only electrically but also mechanically, thermally, and from a packaging perspective, as the battery system must seamlessly interface with the chassis, cooling systems, and vehicle control networks whilst meeting strict dimensions and safety requirements.
Marketing & Partnerships
Recruiting 1-2
The Marketing & Partnerships team makes sure UGRacing has the funds to operate and successfully build our winning cars whilst also reaching a wider audience by running the team’s social media. This team is not only responsible for communicating with and managing relations with current partners, but also has the chance to search for, get into contact with and acquire new partners for the team to work with. Being a part of the Marketing & Partnerships team means representing the team in a professional setting and conducting business on the team’s behalf. Partnerships have the power to transform the team and enable us to achieve our ambitious goals every year.
Sub-team members also have the option to specialise in creating Media for UGRacing’s social media output. This ranges from photography to car livery design. Being a part of the Media team gives its members the chance to be creative and see the results of their work through online engagement and team awareness. If relevant feel free to upload a portfolio along with a CV when applying.
Opportunities include maintaining a strong relationship and communicating with our current partners, searching for, reaching out and acquiring new partners for the team, working with other operations teams to promote our partners, and coming up with creative ways to collaborate with our partners and promote UGRacing.
Opportunities Include:
Team Photography & Videography
